The Camino Fiber Network Cooperative (CFNC) is a California
cooperative nonprofit corporation formed to provide Internet protocol-based
telecommunications services in El Dorado County.
Telecommunications cooperatives were formed in the United
States early in the 20th Century to provide telephone service in areas where
investor owned companies could not profitably provide service.
A similar situation exists today with many El Dorado County residents lacking reliable and affordable access to today's modern
telecommunications services including high speed Internet, video and Voice Over
Internet Protocol (VOIP) due to incomplete build out of telecommunications infrastructure. As Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius
Genachowski described them in a March 2, 2010 speech, these services are
"not only the Web and email; it’s a telephone; it’s television; it’s a library;
it’s a town hall."
To deliver these vital services now and in the future with
superior value for its owner members, CFNC intends to construct open access fiber optic-based
telecommunications infrastructure with the goal of "no home left behind."
